However, that can be difficult.

  • Finding competitors
  • finding your competitors' competitors
  • Considering their ranking
  • Analyze those ranking.

But this is somewhat difficult if you don't know where to look. But if you do, you can find.

  1. Amazing keywords you would have never thought of
  2. Your competitors' most profitable keywords
  3. Their competitors' most profitable keywords
  4. Realy good estimates for how much traffic a given keyword generate
  5. WAY MORE keywords then you'd find otherwise

That's what we're going to meet in this lesson.
Specifically, you'll learn:

  • Why poaching your competition's keywords is a great strategy
  • How to find real competitors
  • How to find what they're ranking for
  • How to incorporate these into your strategy

You're going to need a few tools:

  • SEM Rush for competitors research
  • Long Tail Pro

For most of this lesson, I'll be using the paid versions, but I'll tell you how to alter the process at the end. Competitor Keywords Research and SEM Rush in CPA PPD and Affiliate Marketing.

Here's the fundamental principle.

  • Use SEM Rush to find existing competitors, if you don't have an established site, use Google to find competitors.
  • Analyze their top keywords
  • Use long tail pro to validate keyword competitiveness, check for anomalies and identified SERP learn.

Finding competitors for established sites.
Super easy: just plug your URL into SEM Rush and scroll to the competitive positioning map.

Here's what the competitive positioning map shows you:

  • Sites that have the most keywords in common with you
  • This is good because Google probably views your site similarly
  • So, whatever keywords they're ranking for should be within reach of your site.

Bonus Step!

  • Click any competitor on the Competitive positioning map
  • That will take you to that site's SEM Rush page
  • You can then see all of your competitor's competitors
  • ..which means you can see their keywords

You can do this pretty much forever, finding a never-ending stream of competitors and keywords.

Finding competitors for new sites.
If your site is new (or not yet created), you SEM Rush won't show any data at all. So, you need to turn to Google to find competitors (you're going to have to do a bit of hunting)

They should meet these criteria:

Ranking for at least one right keywords you want to rank for
Same type pf site you want to build (niche site, e-commerce, etc.)
An an achievable DA (Domain Authority) - usually in the 20s or 30s for a new site

Here's an example:

Awesome, but how do I find my competitors' keywords?
In SEM Rush, click on Positions in the right sidebar.

What's all this data?

  • All of the keywords your competitors are ranking for
  • Organized by % of their traffic each keyword brings in
  • Also, include standard information (CPC, Search volume, etc.)
  • It does not contain keyword difficulty/competitiveness (for this, use Long Tail Pro)

What to look for when looking for a juicy keyword to steal.

  • The same types of keywords you want to rank for
  • Keywords they're ranking in the top three spots for
  • keywords they're ranking poorly for (p.2 or more) but are still bringing in significant traffic
  • Keywords they're ranking for with weak articles (i.e. poor on-page SEO)
