Who is my competition?
Well, first let's talk about who it's not. Your competition is NOT:

  • Every site targeting that keyword (title game)
  • Every similar place in your market

Your competition is ONLY:

  • The top 10 result in Google
  • 99.9% of the time, you don't need to worry about anything else.

Why? Because if you can beat them, you can get on the first page on Google.

How do I analyze my competition?
Before we get into all the juicy details, a few quick notes.

  • These things apply at both the page level and the SERP level
  • You can look at the general trends in the SERPs
  • Or.. you can analyze these things to estimate how involved a particular page might be to best.

Great, but when I'm looking at the top 10 results in Google, what should I be looking for?

First, look at the relevance of the content.
Is the content relevant? Is it answering the question the searcher is likely to be asking? Is it solving their problem? Is it doing it in an accurate, relevant why? Is the content good?

Less relevant content will be less competitive. Pay more attention to the top few result here.

Then, check to see how many result have optimized page titles.
Does the page title contain in a keyword? If so, how many of them? Do they include the exact keyword in the title?

If there are a few (or even all) of the result that doesn't contain the keyword in the title, the keyword will be less competitive.

Are the top result root domains or subpages?
Are the results root domains? Are they subpages? Which make up more of the SERPs? Root domain will, in general, be harder to beat than subpages.

Check the authority of the page.
Check the page Authority(PA) of the page. If looking at the SERPs, check the average PA. PA is closely related to SEO power. So, in general, pages with high PA will be harder to beat.

Analyze the page links.
How many total links downs a page have? How many "juice" links? If looking at the SERPs, look at the general trend.

Great keywords will have competition with very few links. The result in the SERPs for my favorite keywords typically has almost no links.

Next, take a look at the link relevancy.
Analyze the links pointing to the page(s). Do they come from relevant sites? Do they come from authoritative sites? Are they contextual and editorial? You can check these in MOZ open site explorer, majestic.com, or ahrefs.com.

Please with links from highly relevant, authoritative sites will be tougher to beat in general.

What's the Domain Authority?
Look at the Domain Authority of competing pages. How high is it? Are there at least five sites ranking with a sub-30 DA?

Look for keywords for which the SERPs show 5 or more sites with a DA 30 0r less.

Then, check the average age of the sites ranking for that keyword.
Age is a known ranking factor, and old sites tend to rank better than new sites. So, look for keywords that have lots of young sites ranking. You can find this metric in Long Tail Pro.

Lastly, look for weak sites in the top 10 results.
This is probably the most important thing to look for when analyzing your competition. Are there "weak" sites ranking?

Weak sites include sites like the following:

  • Forums
  • Other niche sites
  • Affiliate sites
  • Q&A sites
  • Article directors

Most important are there sites like yours ranking? The best keywords will show that your kind of site can rank for that keyword.

Here's an example of what I like to see in the top 10 results:

  • Sites with lower quality content of doesn't fully answer search query
  • A few sites were not targeting exact keywords in the title
  • No more than 1 or 2 root domains
  • At least two locations under PA30+ have little juice page links(under 30)
  • A few sites less than a year old
  • 2+ weaker sites preferred, like Q&A sites or forums, etc
  • A few sites like mine-preferably in the top 3 spots
  • Keyword competitiveness (KC) of 30 or less preferred

Remember: this stuff is flexible. If one metric is exceptionally good, you probably have a bit of an elbow room with another.
