Secondary keywords, on the other hand, have much lower stakes (since they won't be getting such a big investment)
What is it?
It's a metric used in Long Tail Platinum to judge quickly how difficult a keyword is to rank for. It combines lots of different data points from competing for sites to do this. It takes the following stuff into account:
The competitiveness keyword metric is important because it can drastically, reduce the time you spend doing keywords research. It can also add a good, reliable, comprehensive filter for initial keyword selection. And lastly, it can serve as the one-and-only criteria for low-stakes keywords.
Keyword competitiveness exists on a spectrum. Here's the low-down on how to read it:
let's take a closer look at each of these.
High relevance
A keyword that is highly relevant to a site will be easier to rank for than something totally irrelevant, even if it's an "easy" keyword. For example, a site about car insurance will have a tough time ranking for an article on pizza ovens.
You want to shoot for high relevance.
That said, you can settle for tangential connection if it makes sense for your site and your audience.
Decent Search Volume
Obviously, higher local monthly search volume (LMS) is better. However, keywords with great LMS are often very competitive. The trick is to find low-competition keywords that still have decent search volume.
Here are some numbers to shoot for:
CPCs Around $1
First, CPC isn't necessary for all types of keywords. For example, affiliate CPA and PPD secret products may have low CPCs but are still able to bring in lots of revenue.
That said, CPC does give a rough estimate of AdSense earnings. The basic formula is: (LMS * 42.12% (% of traffic the #1 spot gets) * Adsense CTR * Adsense CPC).
Shoot for CPCs of $1 or more. Lower CPCs are okay if the search volume is higher. Lower CPCs are also fine if the article is earning money from Cost per action (CPA) pay per download (PPD) or affiliate market.
Higher Advertiser Competition
High advertiser competition is good. It makes two things: (1) CPCs are more accurate, and (2) there's money being spent in your PPD CPA Affiliate niche. This is not the be-all-end-all, but it's a good quality signal that there are customers in a market who are buying stuff, and that is a good indicator that you can branch your CPA PPD and Affiliate blog or website out into physical products, info products, or services.
Low Google Competition
One of the important things to look for when to analyze a keyword is little competition in Google. That means that these kinds of sites show up in the SERPs:
One of the best ways to determine the level of competition in Google is to use Long Tail Platinum's keyword competitiveness (KC) metric. Shoot for keywords with a KC of 35 or below. Keywords with a KC below 25 are even better.
Similar Sites Ranking
This may be the most important of all ranking factors. You want to see sites just like your ranking. Ideally, they'll be ranking in the top spots.
Why? If Google is happy to rank those sites, they'll be glad to rank yours, too!
The opposite is also true: If there are no site like yours, it's a sign that Google doesn't like to rank sites like yours for that keyword. In other words, this is a very simple version of market research and market validation.
Other Quick Things to Look for in a Primary Keywords:
But most important.

Look for primary keywords you can build pillar articles around. Even if something is super-niche, it should be something for which you can write a crazy guide, develop an infographic, or.. anything else that will attract links, shares, and traffic. Your pillar articles are the backbone of your site.

But the most important thing is.
Keyword Competitiveness!
Keyword competitiveness can and should be mostly what you look at and consider for secondary keywords. These keywords are low-stakes. They don't require detailed research. More of a shot-gun approach. After meeting some very basic requirement, pick what fits best on your site. Since the technical requirements aren't as stick, choosing what's best for your audience takes priority.

- Title structure
- Page authority
- Domain authority
- Total links and "juice" links
- site age
The competitiveness keyword metric is important because it can drastically, reduce the time you spend doing keywords research. It can also add a good, reliable, comprehensive filter for initial keyword selection. And lastly, it can serve as the one-and-only criteria for low-stakes keywords.

Other criteria of a winning keyword:
- Relevance
- Local monthly search volume of 2000 or more
- Good CPC ($1 or more for ad-based sites)
- High advertiser competition
- Weak competition in Google
- Similar sites ranking
let's take a closer look at each of these.
High relevance

- Secondary Keywords: Anything over 50, but 200-880 seems to be a sweet spot.

- The overall strength of the user experience of the post, pages and articles ranking for that keyword. Bad design is usually a good thing (although ugly pages can sometimes convert well, have low bounce rates, etc.)
- The strength of the on-page SEO for CPA PPD of competing pages. You want to see pages were not hitting all the on-page stuff you know you can run.
But most important.

Winning Criteria of Secondary keywords
Secondary keywords have similar-- but considerably less rigorous--criteria as primary keywords. Here's more or less what you want to look for.- Relevance: Relevance to your CPA PPD Affiliate niche in some way. Fine to have weaker buying intent; you need other types of the article anyway.
- Okay CPC: Doesn't matter much, but higher is still better.
- Decent advertiser competition: Doesn't matter much, but higher is still better
- Search Volume: 200-800 is the sweet spot, but anything over 10 is fine since you'll rank for tons of associate long-tail keywords.
