There are lots of ways. Here are just a few.

Long Tail Pro
Long Tail Pro is probably one of the greatest ways to expand your seed keywords into hundreds of great keywords you can use for your site. It can do lots of cool stuff, including:

  • Generate Thousand of keywords from just a few seed keywords
  • Analyze the relevant data for each keyword
  • Condense everything into one easy metric

Let me show you how it's done.

1. Start a New Campaign

2. Plug in your seed keywords.

3. use modifiers.
Clicking on a seed keyword allows you to input other words you want to include or exclude from the result.

For Example: if you're starting a product review site, you might add modifiers like "best,"top" and "review" since those are the keywords that perform well for that type of site. You can use these to find keywords that more closely align with your goals. For that same location, you might exclude modifiers like "for sale" and "buy", since those are mostly eCommerce keywords.

4. Try different filters.
Filters let you look for a particular type of keywords. Here are a few different filters I like to use:

  • Local Search Volume: 2000+ for primary KEYWORDS; 50-2000 for secondary keywords
  • Ad competition: Higher is better, but start your search with these blank to see all your options
  • Some words: Long tail keywords don't have to be long(lots of words), but more extended keywords tend to be lower competition. Experiment with this

Just remember, every site and every market is different, so experiment with all this stuff to find optimal keywords.

Let's look at an example:

Here, I don't know the niche well yet, so I'm just seeking to see if I can find some good primary and secondary keywords on a preliminary search with broad parameters.

You could search for, say, only main keywords by searching for keywords with 2000+ search volume.

Now for the fun part.
You'll get a HUGE list of potential keywords. You can sort them by each data point(each column): CPC, search volume, adviser competition, the number of words, keyword competitiveness, and alphabetical order.

Now, browse the keywords.
Look for good matches:

  • Keywords that achieve individual goals(buying keywords, affiliate keywords, viral keywords)
  • Keywords that would make fun/interesting article
  • Keywords that seem essential for a site in a different market

When you find an interesting keyword, click it to see its data. If you have Long Tail Platinum, you can also click the "calculate" button to see how challenging the keywords is to rank for in one easy metric(keyword competitiveness). This happens automatically when you click a keyword to view looks like:

Here's an example of what an expanded keyword looks like:

I like this keyword. Now, what?
I like "best hunting knife sharpner.: I think it'll make a great secondary keyword. What do I do now?
Just hover over the keyword and click the star to add it to your favorites.

Your favorites are all stored in the same tab.

For my money.
Long Tail Pro is by far the most efficient way to expand seed keywords into hundreds of profitable, actionable keywords. Thar said it was not the only way. Here are a few other ways you can develop seed keywords.

You can also use Google's keyword planner tool.
Pros of using Google's tool:

  • Right, current data
  • Lots and lots of keyword ideas
  • Can see search trends

Cons of using google's tool."

  • Built for advertisers, not marketers
  • No indication of ranking difficulty
  • Can't include/exclude modifier

Another useful method: use Ubersuggest
Ubersuggest.org is an awesome( and free) tool for endless ideas. It uses Google instant results for each letter. Just type in different seed keywords and see what comes up. You can do this with all your best footprints.

Just be aware that it has the same major drawbacks as other tools, mostly that there's no indication of ranking difficulty; you'll have to inspect each one by one.

You can also use Google's related search results.

Here's how to do it.
Type seed keywords into Google. Does Google suggest any keywords that are different enough to be their articles? Most of the time, these should be very easy for your site.

Or, use SEM Rush.

Pros of using SEM Rush:

  • Can view CPC trends
  • Can see CPC distribution by country
  • Can see both phrase matches and related keywords

Cons of using SEM Rush:

  • No indicator of ranking difficulty
  • Cannot include/exclude modifiers
  • Can only search one keyword at a time

Using SEM Rush is pretty easy. Just plop your keyword into the search box and look for this stuff:

You'll get a huge list of keywords to analyze. Use "phrase match" to find keywords with your exact seed keyword in them. Use "Related keywords" to find keywords that are similar to your seed keywords.

And those are just a few ways to expand seed keywords!

personally, I prefer to use a select few amazing tools to make my keywords research super-easy, super-efficient, and super-profitable.
